THE 2023 SEASON
OF

OUR COMMUNITY READS

from the Friends of the Aptos Library!

Four books were selected as candidates
for a program that is designed to bring members
of our community together around one book.
On September 22, 2022
Mary Coin
by Marisa Silver was selected
by a group of community members
for our 2023 season.
We are encouraging all readers to get involved!

“… critically acclaimed author Marisa Silver takes Dorothea Lange’s Migrant Mother photograph as inspiration for a breathtaking reinvention — a story of two women, one famous and one forgotten, and of the remarkable legacy of their chance encounter.”
Picture
“… the book on climate change and sea levels that was missing … Rising is both a highly original work of lyric reportage and a haunting meditation on how to let go of the places we love.”

Picture
“… something of a Walden of our times… weaving wave wisdom with literary and historical references … not for surfers only: even readers who have never seen the surf will find themselves taken up in the book's rhythms.”

Picture
" ... a look at the history of
the foods we have loved to death and what that means for the culinary paths we choose for the future ...
…  a series of extinction dinners designed to recreate meals of the past or to illustrate how we might be eating in the future.”

Click on each book cover for more information.

In early Spring 2023 the selected book, and themes in the book, will be highlighted in a series of special events.
We are looking forward to a calendar of events that will allow participants to delve into many themes from this book. Events will likely take place during the month February 2023.
All events will be free and open to the public.

Our events aim to create a shared experience that will increase appreciation for our community libraries and for our local bookstores; foster pride in the varied experiences that our area offers; and the enrichment –– culturally, intellectually, and emotionally –– that comes from the joy of reading!
