THE 2022 SEASON
OF

OUR COMMUNITY READS

from the Friends of the Aptos Library!

Four books were selected as candidates
for a program that is designed to bring members
of our community together around one book.

On October 12, 2021 one book was selected
by a group of community members
for our 2022 season.
We are encouraging all readers to get involved!

“A vivid portrayal of artistic life during the Red Scare and the challenges women screenwriters faced in the era’s entertainment industry. It is also a witty and harrowing tale of intrigue, friendship and romance. Stratford imbues the text with lively energy and a wry voice…. Red Letter Days is a timeless and relevant story about the dangers of bias, conformity and groupthink." - BookTrib

A “remarkable” (Los Angeles Times), “seductive” (The Wall Street Journal) debut from the new cohost of Radiolab, Why Fish Don’t Exist is a dark and astonishing tale of love, chaos, scientific obsession, and—possibly—even murder.

“If America appears fractured at the national level, the author suggests, it can be mended at the local one. This is an engrossing, timely, hopeful read, nothing less than a new lens through which to view the world and its current conflicts.” -- Booklist (starred)

“Full of Ozeki’s signature humor and deeply engaged with the relationship between writer and reader, past and present, fact and fiction, quantum physics, history, and myth, A Tale for the Time Being is a brilliantly inventive, beguiling story of our shared humanity and the search for home.”
A brilliant, unforgettable novel from bestselling author Ruth Ozeki — shortlisted for the Booker Prize.

In early Spring 2022 the selected book, and themes in the book, will be highlighted in a series of special events (likely virtual!)  Even though, due to the current restrictions, our calendar of events will be much reduced, and likely in virtual venues, we are looking forward to a calendar of events that will allow participants to delve into many themes from this book.
Events will likely take place during the month February 2022.  All events will be free and open to the public.

Our events aim to create a shared experience that will increase appreciation for our community libraries and for our local bookstores; foster pride in the varied experiences that our area offers; and the enrichment –– culturally, intellectually, and emotionally –– that comes from the joy of reading!
