ANNOUNCING
THE 2020 SEASON OF
OUR COMMUNITY READS

from the Friends of the Aptos Library!

We are currently in the process of selecting
the winning book for the 2020 season
of Our Community Reads.
We have preselected 5 books, fiction and non-fiction.
Here are a few hints about them:

  • “A double tale of voyage and exile that moves between contemporary war-torn Syria and ... its lost past.”
  • “Timely...truthful account of the immigrant and exile experiences in the Chinese-American context.”
  • “A tale that reminds us there are forces at work out there well beyond our control, and... understanding.”
  • “Compellingly readable book about the great fault, America's 800-mile long seismic danger zone..."
  • "Fascinating exploration of America's food innovators, that gives us hopeful alternatives to our industrial food system."
Watch this space for news of all five books by the end of September.
The winning title will be announced late Fall 2019. Stay tuned!!

Our Community Reads is a program launched in August 2017 by the Aptos Chapter of the
Friends of the Santa Cruz Public Libraries.

The goal is to create a shared experience by having members of the entire Santa Cruz community - from teens to adults - all reading the same book.

Our book selection criteria:
  • Fiction or non-fiction
  • Thought provoking but not overly controversial
  • Appeals to both men and women
  • Suitable for high school students 17 and older
  • The possibility of an author visit
  • Ideally, not more than 350 pages, available in paperback, but not so old that “everyone” has already read it.
