Master Women Artists at Work
& Current Landscapes Paintings by Ann Thiermann Thiermann’s current show at the Aptos Library “Portraits of Women Making Art” revisits a sampling of the comprehensive show of 25 artists and their work completed in 2009. Her landscapes are also on display.
Ann Elizabeth Thiermann, a classically-trained landscape and figurative painter has designed over seventy murals for California natural history museums, art museums, libraries, educational institutions, commercial and private venues, ranging in scale from 3500 sq feet to intimate 5’ x 7’ trompe l’oeil windows. Based on her plein air studies, her landscapes murals capture the mood of a specific marine or land environment, with particular care given to the native flora and fauna specifically of the Monterey Bay. “I love painting on location for the chance to hear and smell nature and watch the subtle changes in the light. Stretching a light effect across my landscape paintings and larger murals gives me the same joy I feel when I craft musical phrases on the organ or piano. Feeling the connection between music and art, I also strive to engage the viewer with the flow of color and line, akin to musical expression. While painting a portrait, I strive to capture the flow of gesture and light across the figure and also express the inner light of the person.” An experienced college educator, emeritus at Cabrillo, Monterey Peninsula, and UC Extension, Ann continues to teach fundamental skills in drawing and pastel through Cabrillo's Extension Program. Thiermann’s participation in the artistic community of Santa Cruz remains multi-dimensional since her arrival in 1990 as a muralist/painter, educator, and pianist/organist. Trace Monotype Workshop A special workshop is scheduled at the Aptos Library on Saturday, March 8 from 1:00 to 3:00 pm Space is limited. Be sure to register right away! Printmaker/artist Jane Gregorius will offer a Trace Monotype Workshop at the Aptos Library on Saturday, March 8 from 1:00 to 3:00 pm. Although specifically aimed at children ages 5 and over, parents and friends are welcome and encouraged to participate too. Those new to the Trace Monotype technique might remember carbon paper tracings and will see that instead of carbon paper, tracings will be done on slabs of brightly colored inks with a number of tools, from sophisticated combs and metal pieces down to fingers, pencils and ball point pens. Finished artworks may be very abstract or carefully traced reality in nature and there will be examples of past successful prints.
Jane Gregorius retired from the Cabrillo College art department after 25 years and has been making prints for 50 years. She is a founding member of the printmaking co-op: PATT - Printmakers at the Tannery. Click here to learn more about the art of Jane Gregorius. |
